Through careful collaboration with IX Engineers and the community, pathways were surveyed, retaining walls and stormwater infrastructure were installed, and a more convenient, safe method of access was constructed. Approximately 800m of paths, 760sqm of retaining walls and associated kerbs, drains and stormwater structures were constructed.
The upliftment of disadvantaged informal communities in South Africa includes the construction of "Incremental Services" in those areas. For this project completed in 2021, Ramtar Construction were involved with the construction of footpaths and retaining walls in an informal settlement, to allow residents to gain safe access to their dwellings. The conditions on the site included steep hillside with dangerous drop-offs and some areas were low lying with poor drainage.

This project was completed in 2019 and involved the construction of incremental services in the Amaoti-Moscow area and included the construction of approximately 600m of asphalt and concrete access roads with associated layerworks, stormwater pipe crossings and headwalls, subsoil drainage, kerbs, v-drains and retaining walls. The site was in a densely populated area with pedestrian and vehicle traffic and we were required to maintain access to properties at all times, which posed no small difficulty as the roads under construction were extremely narrow. Despite the awkward conditions, our team succeeded in completing the project within time and budget and we were very proud to have been involved in this community upliftment project.
The Buffelsdraai Landfill Lining Installation project began at the end of March and we are now passing the critical 'spine' of the cell. Ramtar Construction was contracted by Melki Civils and Plant Hire to install the Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) as well as supply and install the geotextile protection layer over the HDPE.
Challenges include coordination between 3 contractors working in the same space, as well as keeping a sharp eye on the sky as the GCL must not get wet in the rain and has to be covered pronto if there's a downpour - cricket pitch style! With 31500 sqm to cover, we have found our rhythm and the team has come together nicely. Here's hoping for good weather in the next couple of weeks! What a beautiful place to work! We were recently contracted to upgrade Mkhizwana Road in the Valley of a Thousand Hills near Inchanga. The original gravel road was realigned and new G5 and G2 layers were added to the pavement before topping it off with asphalt. Great team effort from all involved!
In 2015 we successfully constructed 875m of sidewalks on Mariannhil Rd and Young Rd in Pinetown. It was a little challenging to work next to the busy road and try to cause as little disruption to pedestrians and residents alike. In the end we came out on top and I'm sure that the community are very glad to have a decent sidewalk to use.
Ramtar Construction were recently approached by ShreeProp, a large Durban based property development group, to install subsoil drainage in a new warehouse facility in the Southgate Business Park. The property was continually flooded with groundwater and a solution was needed to ensure that the layerworks for the pavements at the rear of the building would maintain their integrity. Ramtar Construction installed innovative flownet cut-off drains on the perimeter of the building and are currently installing a herringbone system of subsoil drains over the rest of the area. The rain over the past months has not helped and site conditions are challenging to say the least!
The completion of the Strelitzia School Science Hall in Ispingo, officially christened the "Golden Pond 67 Science Centre" marks a milestone for Ramtar Construction this year. The 180 square meter hall is a learning facility dedicated to science, chemistry and computer science and boasts a 60 seat lecture and demonstration hall, a computer LAN, office and storeroom.
Ramtar Construction are proud to be part of a social development pro by Golden Pond 67 (Pty) Ltd. The project is for the construction of a school science hall for Strelitzia Secondary School in Isipingo. Construction includes the installation of the roof, windows and doors, and all interior finishes such as the flooring, lecture theatre seating, interior walls and ceilings, plumbing and electrical supply and demonstration table. Construction of a "Loffelstein" type retaining wall in Panorama Park Estate, Winklespruit. The actual wall uses an equivalent approved retaining block called Terrace Bloks. The retaining wall has been engineered for a 3.2m maximum design height and a minimum radius of 2m. Challenges on this project include a constantly varying wall height and a small radius curve. |
